Meta's Thread is highly anticipated
rival to Twitter, has finally arrived. The app, linked to Instagram, has been
in development since January and is launching at a tumultuous time for Twitter.
Ten million
users signed up for Meta's newly launched Threads app in its first seven hours,
the company's chief Mark Zuckerberg says.
The popular microblogging platform, Twitter
, has been undergoing numerous changes under the leadership of Elon Musk and
the new CEO, Linda Yaccarino. Recently, Twitter implemented a rate limit on
users, restricting the amount of content users can read on the platform."
Experts say Threads could attract Twitter users unhappy with recent changes to the platform.
Threads allows users to post up to 500 characters,
and has many features similar to Twitter.
What is Instagram Threads?
Instagram's new Threads app is now available to users.
Threads allows users to post content with up to 500 characters, and they can
include links, photos, or videos that are up to 5 minutes long. The app is
linked to your Instagram account, and Meta claims that users can "easily
share a Threads post to your Instagram story or share your post as a link on
any other platform you choose."
The app can be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store
or the Google Play Store. Once installed, it's fairly straightforward,
especially if you're familiar with both Instagram and Twitter. Simply log in
with your Instagram credentials, and you'll see the option to follow people
from Instagram on Threads.
After creating an account, you'll be prompted to choose
between keeping it private or public. On your feed, you'll see content from
people you've followed on Instagram, as well as native Threads users. Similar
to Twitter, you can customize the settings to block specific words and choose
who can mention you.
Using Threads
Make
sure you have an Instagram account.
While
your Instagram username will be automatically registered, you can change it.
Users
can unfollow, report, block or restrict a profile - just like on Instagram and
Twitter.
Users
can choose to start from scratch on Threads or import their following list and
personal details to Threads.
Below every Threads post are the options to like, comment, repost, and share - stock features of Twitter.
Any users that are blocked on your Instagram app will also be blocked on Threads.

Thread Experience
Threads is
indeed impressive as it combines the features of both Twitter and Instagram
into a new app without imposing significant changes that have become synonymous
with Twitter. Only time will reveal the app's success. Meanwhile, users seeking
an alternative to Elon Musk's Twitter vision will find Threads satisfying. It's
worth mentioning that Threads is not Meta's initial endeavor in this space, and
several Twitter alternatives such as Mastodon, Bluesky, and Hive already exist.
